Where Are Valve Tappets Used in Modern Engines?

Valve tappets work between the camshaft and the rest of the valvetrain, turning the cam profile into controlled valve movement. The part may be a direct-acting bucket, a compact hydraulic lash adjuster, a roller lifter, or a mechanical tappet depending on the engine layout.

Direct-Acting Bucket Tappets

Bucket tappets are common in overhead-cam cylinder heads because they create a compact, direct path from the camshaft to the valve. The bucket sits over the valve spring and stem, with the cam lobe acting on its upper surface.
